a€?Mommoa€? is about the story of two siblings, named AyAYe and Ahmet, who live in a village near the central Anatolian city of Konya and whose father remarried after their mother died. The film was inspired by a real story. Noting that writing the screenplay was an emotionally painful process, TaAYdiken says he tried to make the movie less tragic to avoid exploiting viewersa€™ emotions. We spoke with TaAYdiken on his personal journey that led him to become a filmmaker and the real heroes behind his new film. Can a boy of nine be a big brother, a father, a mother and a luminary all at once? For young Aye, the answer is yes. In fact, as far as she's concerned, her big brother Ahmet is afraid of nothing at all. But the truth is, Ahmet is a child too: he too has his fears and it's impossible for him to know everything. Their father Kazm has gone off to marry another woman and abandoned the two children to their fate with Hasan, their crippled elderly grandfather. But in spite of everything, brother and sister never seem to lose hope. This simple, poignant tale of a village, and the relationship between a brother and sister in that village, portrays one of the grittier realities of Anatolia.
